Please register expression of interest

Equine First Aid Response

Conducted by Amanda Edwards from Equine Care Clinic in VIC. Amanda is an Emergency Nurse, Director of Nursing and Lecturer with 40 years horse experience as well as author of First Response – A Practical Guide to Caring for Your Sick or Injured Horse.

We always have a fantastic day where everyone gets to do hands-on learning with our horses which can make all the difference.

What you will learn at one of these clinics:-

  • Wound first aid and ongoing management
  • When to call the vet
  • Normal and abnormal temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate and how to take them properly
  • Administering intramuscular injections

I attended a first aid clinic at Eaden Equine Wellness Centre on 23rd April. It was a fantastic day. Amanda Edwards was running the clinic and I learned a lot. Some of the things we learned were how to apply a bandage, take vital signs and give an injection. Amanda's simple and common sense way was so informative, interesting and Amanda's lay person way of delivering the information made it so easy to understand and put into practice. Taking a horse’s temperature and heart rate is what I should have known but something I never did. Now I can do these observations, write them down and have them recorded for the veterinarian. One of my biggest fears is injections, I can't have one myself let alone giving one. Well guess what I did. Amanda stood right next to me, showed me where to inject and how, then I surprised myself by giving a horse the injection. I would like to say to anyone with horses if you have the chance to do this clinic please do. I am so much more confidant now. I feel if needed to I could assess, clean and bandage a wound, know when to call a vet and now I am better prepared to do the one thing Amanda told us all “Try not to panic!”. Thankyou to Raymond and Rae for the use of their horses and their hospitality. Thankyou Amanda for giving me the tools I need for horse First Aid.
